4,000 take part in Sabah National Day joy



Kota Kinabalu: About 10,000 Malaysians in Sabah celebrated the nation's 50th independence anniversary in a colourful parade of unity and solidarity at Promenade Boulevard in Anjung Senja here Friday.

Graced by Head of State Tun Ahmadshah Abdullah and consort Toh Puan Dayang Masuyah Japar, the parade started at 7.30am with the fly past by two helicopters from the police air wing unit and two from the airforce.

Accompanying Tun Ahmadshah at the main stage were Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Haji Aman and Cabinet ministers.

A total of 125 contingents comprising more than 4,000 people took part in the parade. There were also 17 vehicle convoys from the security forces and various agencies.

Among the attractions at the parade were the Human Graphics made of 200 people in front of the main stage, silent drill by 50 members of the KD Sri Tawau and the 50 lion dance troops.

Winning the primary school category march past competition was SK Tanjung Aru 2 followed by SK Kem Lok Kawi and Boy Scouts contingent. In the secondary school category, the winner was Sekolah Tunas Bakti followed by SMK Putatan and SMK Perempuan Likas.

SMK Bahang Correctional Cadets won in the secondary school uniformed body category with SM Sains Sabah PKBM (Darat) in second place while SM Shan Tao police cadet in third place.

UiTM Sabah Kesateria Negara contingent won the category for higher learning institutions, while the institute's Civil Defense Unit took second place followed by UMS Suksis Corp.

For the non-uniformed government agencies' category, the State Water Department took first place with the combined-State Federal Department in second place and State Library in third place.

Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) won in the non-Governmental organisation (NGO) category with the Sabah Information Department Setia Club in second and Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) third.

The commercial and private category that saw the various contingents competing not only for their marching skills but also the costumes was won by the Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) followed by Telekom Malaysia Berhad and Sedco Group.

Immigration Department won first place in the uniformed government agencies' category followed by the Road Transport Department and Customs Department.
