Introduction

The rise in the crime rate is a real threat facing industry and commerce in the country today. Security is the protection of life and property and therefore security awareness is not limited to security personnel alone. Security awareness is relevant to non-security people, albeit higher or lower management and entrepreneurs alike. There is an ever-present conflict between higher levels of management and security management regarding the importance and place of security in the organization. Admittedly, security does not contribute directly to generate revenue to any company but is often seen as a necessary burden to protect the assets. Their slighted role coupled with low self-esteem give rise to a general ambiance of unimportance. Security personnel are aware of the slighted role in the organization by the poor pay, low image and feel unimportant and morale is often low. When it matters most, they fail and the fallacy of people in higher management about security being a non-contributor to revenue appears justified. Efficiency, productivity and profits become the victim. It is a vicious cycle. The answer, inter alia, is in exposing both security and non-security staff in management to the importance of security, especially in developing nation that has everything else developing in tandem; amongst them, the crime rate. This security awareness program is designed to instill the importance of security among security as well as non-security management, especially those in middle and higher management. For those in the security industry, it would be a booster to enhance their performance; for the non-security management levels, the course seeks to give insight into an industry that is often misunderstood and slighted.
