MOUNT KINABALU
An aerial view of Kinabalu South showing the'tourist trail' from Laban Rata Resthouse to the summit. Sayat-Sayat huts can just be seen below the clouds. The grooved and polished Panar Laban rock face on the left of Sayat-Sayat huts is a result of glaciation during the last the age.
Trekkers gladly take a breather from their laboured going at Sayat-Sayat, one of the more popular huts to stay. It is closest to the summit which means climbers do not have to resume trekking in the middle of the night to get to the top by dawn.
Ropes guide climbers safely up and down the pitted rock slope of the summit.
If you are fortunate, you can reach South Peak on a
clear blue day. The weather is fickle with the mountain, one moment brilliant
sunshine, next misty and cloud signalling a drenching thin layer of rock to
flake off the granite face, giving the summit a tiled look.
An aerial view of Kota Kinabalu East showing the jagged peaks.
Peaks and pinnacles carved by ice during the last Ice Age rise out of the grey expanse of West Kinabalu's sloping semi-dome shaped Summit Plateau. Low;s Peak at 4.101 metres is located at the top left of the picture.
