Situated just two kilometers north-east of Kota Kinabalu, the 24-hectare (60 acres) Kota Kinabalu City Bird Sanctuary or KKCBS is the only remaining patch of extensive mangrove forest that once excised in much of the coastal town of Kota Kinabalu .KKCBS is not only a strategically situated environmental education centre serving both local and international visitors interested in wetlands, flora and fauna. As an environmenta education centre , it also provides for urban recreaion, nature appreciation and eco-tourism. Mangrove plants are specially adapted to grow in the mud and brackish water to give a home to many birds, crab, prawns and fishes. The site is a vital refuge and feeding ground for many species from Northern Asia. So far, more than 80 species of bird have been identified at the sanctuary! For those who enjoy bird watching, this is a visit to schedule in your diary. You will be rewarded with the beauty and splendor of the birds and other wildlife that thrive in the mangroves.
