Plasma membrane is semipermeable which only allows certain substances to pass through either in or out of the cells. Large molecules such as protein and starch are unable to pass through. Water soluble, polar and hydrophilic molecule move through protein structure - carrier protein and channel protein. Fat soluble and hydrophobic molecules are unable to pass through protein structure so they move through phospholipids bilayer.
