Ten things to do
Want to do something to help stop global warming? Here are 10 simple things you can do and how much carbon dioxide you'll save doing them.
Turn off electronic devices
Simply turning off your television, DVD player, stereo and computer when you're not using them will save you thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide a year. That little red standby light means they're still using power - and that means a contribution to global warming. Stand-by uses up to a sixth of all domestic electricity - and this is for machines being turned OFF!
Unplug electronics from the wall when you’re not using them.
Even when turned off, things like hairdryers, cell phone chargers and televisions use energy. In fact, the energy used to keep display clocks lit and memory chips working accounts for 5 percent of total domestic energy consumption and spews 18 million tons of carbon into the atmosphere every year!
Arrange for an "energy audit" of your buildings. Experts will analyse where you're wasting energy and what you can do about it. The audit might be free of charge.
