The Pencil

Ali Majod (1940 - )

Ali Majod, whose real name is Mohamad Ali bin Majod, was born in 1940 in Tampin,
Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. In 1978, he graduated from the Malayan University.
After teaching for a number of years, Ali Majod was appointed as
Senior Editor at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, a Malaysian publishing company.
While he worked as an editor, Ali Majod wrote many poems, dramas, essays
and short stories. He has written a total of three volumes of short stories.
His story Sayang Si Tina won the first prize in the
Esso-Gapena Short Story Writing Contest in 1980.

In two different years, 1971 and 1975, Ali Majod was awarded the Literary Prize.
He published a number of stories in the magazine Dewan Masyarakat,
among them Pensel Sebatang. This story was translated and appears here as The Pencil.
