This poem is taken from Macbeth (Act 5, Scene 5), a famous play by William Shakespeare. The theme of
the poem is despair, whereby Macbeth expresses despair over the death of his wife, Lady Macbeth, who
committed suicide. This was a result of the guilt she felt after asking her husband to kill the king. At this
terrible moment in his life, he describes life as unpredictable, meaningless and uncertain as a brief candle.
