Remote Functions

When there is a digital local exchange working within an otherwise completely
analogue local network, all the exchange's function will be found within the
exchange building itself. All subscribers are connected over their two wires to
   the subscriber stage.

When sections of the subscriber line network are digitalised, this is at the same
time involves the removal of certain of the functions of the subscriber stage.
You saw an example of this in the previous chapter. In its purest form, a whole
subscriber stage is transferred out onto the network, so-called remote subscriber
stage. Within this are functions for.....

  A/D conversion
  Power supply to subscriber telephones
Signaling to/from subscribers , e.g. reception of the tone signals which make
up the B-number, and the ringing signal to the subscriber
Test access for measurements on the subscriber lines
